Blog Poetry: I once walked into a pool with my Smart Phone…(Maybe you should too)

I once walked into a pool with my Smart Phone…

Maybe you should too.

Initial feelings:

Anger,

Frustration,

Self-judgement,

Liberation?

I began to feel

Free,

Present,

Connected.

I had to use my time

Intentionally.

Deliberately.

Without a screen

filling a void.

What was the void?

Fear of missing out?

Lack of belonging?

Boredom?

I had to actually decide,

What will I do

When there is a free moment?

It wasn’t easy.

Smart Phones make it easy to

Check emails,

Use social media,

Entertain yourself,

Disconnect from reality.

The Smart Phone wouldn’t get fixed,

Not even with rice,

Draining the water,

And other ideas.

I got a flip phone.

I laughed when using it.

It was:

Simple.

Slow.

Limited.

Perfect.

I began to think:

Why would I waste my time

Staring into a shiny little box

Called a Smart Phone?

How much of my life

Have I wasted away already…

Pursuing meaninglessness?

Now I look around at screen dependence

With sadness,

Regret,

Anger,

And a resolve

To never return.

I instead choose intention,

Experiences,

Living my meaning,

Service,

Quality time,

Family.

The main message?

The next time you walk into a pool

Maybe you should make sure

Your Smart Phone fries

In the water too...

Just a thought.
